IASCA Champ Honda Fit
Julian Ridi purchased his Honda Fit in 2006. The radio was removed almost instantly. Julian is a long-time enthusiast and had a lot of old gear, all of which made its way into the new car. The path from enthusiast to winning sound competitor started when he was a teen. He had a cousin with a great sounding setup and that inspired him to request a co-op through high school to work for a local electronics repair/car audio shop. “I then volunteered on and off over the span of five years during high school and college,” Julian says.
He only started on major custom work in the past five years. “A lot of trial and error, let me tell you,” he says. In 2001, he had to choose between entering Mobile Dynamics in Canada or going into television production. He went off to college and took a break from car audio for four years. Late in 2005, he took a job at a Canadian Electronic chain as an installer, but then there was an opening in his current profession and thus the store lost an installer but potentially gained a customer.
With the help of car audio magazines, online forums and three close friends of his, Julian has been able to go from enthusiast to serious sound competitor. “The major turning point for me was at my very first Canadian IASCA show. After weeks of installation efforts, my shot at a decent trophy placing was shattered rather quickly,” Julian says. He finished last in SQi and took home tenth in SQc. Right after the show, he sold all his gears and designed a new system. At the 2009 SBN show, it took third place in SQi Rookie. Julian competed heavily with that system until later he decided sell all that gear as well and start new again. This time he went and got aircraft aluminum to use for all baffles, made some custom water jet battery mounts, aluminum trunk floor and a Baltic birch amp rack. The majority of the build was fabricated in Central Station Customs Kananwake Quebec. “I rented half the install bay and tools for a couple of weeks and then finished the install at home over the course of four months. When he returned to the IASCA 2010 championships, he took the 1st place championship in SQI Rookie and a respectable third place in SQi Amateur.
