So What
The Hotel So in Christchurch is amazing, and I hope other hotels will take a cue from them. It is a unique combination of high-tech and low impact accommodation. Reviewers on TripAdvisor and Expedia have some criticisms of the place, but they are simply wrong, by which I mean they are approaching their review in the wrong way. You have to think about what you’re gaining by staying here and compare that to the trade-offs. For example, the rooms are very small and the decor simple. Luxurious carpets and furniture are absent, which I really appreciate. House-keeping is extra and is done only when you request it. This, too, I find refreshing and appreciate. When I was fifteen days in Vancouver, one of the most irritating things about my stay was having to remember to put out the “Do Not Disturb” sign at night, often after several pints of Granville Winter Lager at the Loose Moose, or be awakened by housekeeping in the morning. I don’t need my sheets and towels changed every day because I don’t do these things at home, and it’s simply wasteful. So they’ve stripped down the traditional room to its essentials, but they’ve added some technology. The bathroom, for example, looks like something they might have on the space shuttle. It’s essentially in a corner of the room with sliding round doors. I’ve never needed much in the way of a bathroom, and this gives me all that I need but with a cool shower head and mood lighting. That’s right; I said mood lighting. I use the blue lights because blue is the best. I also have seven mood channels on the television, from surf to landscapes to water to fire. Also, the alarm system is one of those sun lights above.your bed that increases gradually like a natural sunrise. If you do not wake form that, the television will come on, play music, and give you an image of the sun rising from the live camera on the hotel rooftop. There is free wireless Internet without a code throughout the hotel, and there a four iMacs in the lobby for guest use. The staff wears black uniforms with belt buckles that read SO. If that weren’t enough, the bar/cafe is called What. How cool is that? If that weren’t enough, the food is all organic, inexpensive, and delicious. Main dishes at night are $12 New Zealand, which is a little over $8 US. If that weren’t enough, they have smoothies and muesli for breakfast that is delicious. And I haven’t even told you the best part. We have a room with two beds for $52 a night American. That’s right, we are staying in Christchurch at this amazing place for $26 each a night with free Internet. We’ve been paying $10 for a half-hour and only 10MB everywhere else. I love the Hotel So and What.
