I was reading an article today about protective equipment for bikers and it reminded me of the various accidents I’ve had throughout my 10 years of riding. To be honest I’ve come off virtually all of my bikes, all at low speed strangely but have sustained some serious injuries due to not wearing the correct kit. I remember a comical moment when turning onto a road on my Fireblade, from standstill so in first gear, hit an unexpected bump in the road, the front wheel came up and I accidently twisted the throttle fully open, flew over the back and watched as the bikes front wheel came down, still upright and heading for the Chinese takeaway. Quite embarrassing, didn’t know whether to run down the road after it or just watch, wasn’t sure which of the two I’d look less stupid doing. Opted for doing both, legged it a bit then gave up. You should have seen the shop owners face! Luckily it clipped the rear bumper of a parked car and fell over when it hit the curb. I was only wearing a rolled up shirt, suit trousers and trainers so even though this was probably a 20mph accident, both my forearms were a bit worse for wear and the nurse at A&E was even talking of a possible skin graft! Luckily they healed completely and good as new, I’ve always healed well for some reason, handy though!

A more serious accident was on my R1. At a set of traffic lights, I accelerated quickly to 30 (30 limit and speed camera van parked up), into a bus lane but after just entering the lane there is an area where cars can cross, you guessed it, a car didn’t see me and came across my path and I went into the side of it, all seems like slow motion now – I can even remember looking in the windscreen as I was flying over the bonnet at the terrified young woman driving it. God only knows how far I flew and rolled down the road but I guess it must have looked quite spectacular. I decided to lay there for a bit to give my body a few seconds to tell me if it knew of anything no longer working but adrenalin is a marvellous thing. I tried to stand up but after a single step hit the deck once more and decided not to try it again, that did hurt! While laying in the middle of the bus lane hoping not to get run over I could hear a few other bikes pulling up and pedestrians running over and screaming at me not to take my helmet off, too late, wasn’t prepared to wait for the ambulance crew to do it. It’s strange what you think about in these situations but if I was going into surgery I was glad I didn’t have my surprise underwear on! Next thing I know I was hearing a familiar voice from someone standing over me “Phil, what you doin man? Have you seen where you’ve parked your bike?!” I’m glad I never got to see it again actually after Loz describing what it looked like right then, it was obviously a write off and it was given to the insurance company while I was in hospital. Only good thing to come out of it was I got pally with the owner of the local Hells Anglels, he was in a bed opposite me, passed away now bless his soul.
