Fifty Books I Might Review
A few days ago, Larry posted a list of books he wished reviewers in his blogroll would review. As my blog is listed on his blogroll and I am somewhat fond of challenges, especially those that might expand my reading, I feel compelled to have a go at the list. It will be difficult though, but for the challenges the books might offer up. The difficulty here will be finding the books in the first place. I am in a situation where buying books is something best left sporadic, which means the books I have been anticipating come first. For this list, I will be relying on my unreliable public library system. Of course, this does not mean I will not purchase any of the books on this list, just that I will try not to.
Without further ado, the list (with commentary):
Angela Carter, Nights at the Circus ) Gustave Flaubert, The Temptation of Saint Anthony ( “Older books, hey we got those, but if it is newer you want, then good luck… unless you want Twilight, we have Twilight. How about Harry Potter? Eragon?” The library has this one and it is not much of a surprise, really. I have a feeling most of the older books on this list will be found there, the newer works will be more trouble.@ruedigerhajo
Your English is great, no worries. I will be giving Blood Meridian a try, but The Road annoyed me greatly. I have no doubt that he is a great writer, else he would not be so praised, but what I have read of his just doesn’t work for me. I would rather have it otherwise, but… if it doesn’t work, then it doesn’t work. We’ll see if I take to Blood Meridian any better.
As for Pynchon, thankfully I am not easily confused and so far, books that jump around a lot do not bother me. I actually attempted to read Pynchon’s Inherent Vice , but I was unable to get into it–I think it has something to do with the narrator sounding like Tommy Chong in my head.
