London Trip (Day 9 of 10)
Now we are back to real time – or almost real time – I drafted the below soon after getting back to the UK last year, so I’m leaving in all the references that “date” the entry – things like talking about the “upcoming” Harry Potter film, which is now, as I write this introduction, already on DVD and Blu-ray, and things like that. Alright, onward! After the difficulties of the previous night with finding a parking spot for the rented Mercedes, I was happy to get the car back to Hertz as soon as possible. Matt and I went out to the car in the railroad parking lot and thankfully the nice bright and shiny hood ornament was still there. I don’t know why I was so concerned about it getting stolen. Maybe because whenever my family had a car with one, it invariably ended up getting vandalized. Marta, the same Polish girl from the day before, checked us back in and called a taxi for us. She was relieved the car was in one piece. We made small talk with Marta and chatted about the upcoming G20 protests. She remarked that we probably wouldn’t have a problem in London, as the city was so large and spread out. She turned out to be right. She was also surprised by the speed limiter on the car and remarked that she hadn’t seen one of those before. Matt, Mark, and I got on an express train into London. Mark had the amazing idea to check the schedule ahead of time, which meant we could chill in our hotel room and walk to the platform with a minimal amount of wait and fuss. Why we didn't do that before is beyond me. Anyway, we got into London and noticed there were uniformed police on every corner and heard the sound of choppers.
